    Air MarshalWilliam Avery Bishop, VC, CB, DSO & Bar, MC, DFC, ED (8 February 1894 – 11 September 1956) was a Canadian flying ace of the First World War. He was officially credited with 72 victories, making him the top Canadian and British Empire ace of the war, and also received a Victoria Cross. During the Second World War, Bishop was instrumental in setting up and promoting the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan.

    William Avery Bishop (commonly called Billy Bishop to distinguish him from his father) was born in Owen Sound, Ontario, on 8 February 1894, blond, blue-eyed, and weighing 11 pounds. He was the third of four children born to William Avery Bishop Sr. and Margaret Louisa (Green) Bishop. William Avery Bishop Sr. was a lawyer and graduate of Osgoode Hall Law School in Toro

    Billy Bishop was Canada’s top flying ace of the First World War, and was officially credited with 72 victories. He was the first Canadian airman to receive the Victoria Cross, as well as several other decorations. The Toronto Islands airport is named after him.

     

    During the Second World War, Bishop played an important role as Director of Recruiting for the Royal Canadian Air Force, promoting the British Commonwealth Air Training strategi, selling war bonds and conducting inspection tours. He particularly enjoyed addressing graduating classes of airmen and giving them their wings. He kept a hectic schedule of travelling and public speaking that gradually took a toll on his health. He left government service at the end of 1944 to return to the private sector and died in 1956 at the age of 62.

    A model of Billy's first plane, a Nieuport 17 nicknamed "Little Daisy", with which he earned the Victoria Cross;

    A copy of the book Winged Warfare written by Billy Bishop;

    A model of Billy's second plane, an SE 5A, with the markings of the 85th Squadron known as "The Flying Foxes";

    A share in the Bishop-Barker Aeroplane Company, formed by Billy Bishop and William Barker after the First World. This ill-fated company used three surplus war planes with intent to fly freight and passengers between Toronto and Muskoka, as well as aerial photography;

    Antique furniture collected by Billy and Mrs. Bishop during their years living in Britain;
