  • Anna Ushenina is a Ukrainian grandmaster who won the Women’s World Championship in 2012. She is also the 2020 winner of the Women’s Speed Chess Championship, which was held on Chess.com. Ushenina nearly always opens games with 1.d4 and plays the Sicilian as Black against 1.e4. She goes by Enki007 on Chess.com.

    Early Years And Career

    Ushenina was born in northeastern Ukraine in 1985 in its second largest city, Kharkiv. She started playing chess when she was seven and credits her parents—especially her mother—for getting her interested in it.

    By the time Ushenina was 15, she was Ukraine’s under-20 female champion. Around that time she began studying at Kharkiv’s chess school under IM Artiom Tsepotan. 

    WGM by 2003, Ushenina began competing in the Women’s Chess Championship in 2006, where she advanced to the second round. In 2008, now an IM, she made it to the quarterfinals before falling to the eventual tournament victor, GM Alexa

    Anna Ushenina (born 30 August 1985) is a Ukrainian chess player and the Women’s World Chess Champion since November 2012.

    Ushenina lives in Kharkiv (Ukraine), where she was born. Determined that young Ushenina would develop intellectual and creative talents, her mother introduced her to chess at the age of seven, along with painting and music.

    Tournament successes at Kiev in 2001 and Odessa in 2003, earned her the WGM title, awarded in 2003. Her Olympiad performance and subsequent results in Pardubice and Abu Dhabi (both 2006) then qualified her for the IM title, awarded in January 2007. She got the title of grandmaster as Women’s World Champion in 2012.

    12/5/2012 – On December 1st for the first time in the history of independent Ukraine a chess player won the title of World Women Chess Champion. A few days later Anna Ushenina, the 27-year-old IM from stad i ukraina, returned to her home town to an enthusiastic welcome of family, friends, admirers and dignitaries, with press conferences, gifts and commendations from the country's leadership.
