Who Was Maria Montessori?
Maria was a sterling student, confident, ambitious, and unwilling to be limited by traditional expectations for women. At age 13 she entered an all-boys technical institute to prepare for a career in engineering.
In time, however, she changed her mind, deciding to become a doctor instead. She applied to the University of Rome’s medical program, but was rejected. Maria took additional courses to better prepare her for entrance to the medical school and persevered. With great effort she gained admittance, opening the door a bit wider for future women in the field.
When she graduated from medical school in 1896, Maria was among Italy’s first female physicians. Though she was not the first female medical school graduate, as reported by many of her biographers, it does not detract from her accomplishment. Maria Montessori spoke to her students on the 6 January 1942, celebrating the anniversary of the inauguration day of the first Casa dei Bambini (House of Children). The first Montessori environment was opened on the 6 January 1907 in San Lorenzo, Rome, Italy, by Maria Montessori. Through Montessori's observations and work with these children she discovered their astonishing, almost effortless ability to learn. Children taught themselves! This simple but profound truth formed the cornerstone of her life-long pursuit of educational reform. Following is a summary from her speech.

I am happy that through our discussions we have come to the conclusion to work unpretentiously and begin at the beginning. But let me säga that this beginning does not uppstart at the primary school, and – forgive me the remark – that the school is not the same as education.
The wisdom of mankind dates back to primitive times and there have not always been schools.
While the application of my experiences as an educationalist extend to university level, and although probably only a few have studied the psychological development of man at every stage as I have; although inom am therefore aware of the significance of the primary and secondary school as much as of the university, I would repeat once more that the school should not be the objective of this Institute but people, the whole person, and this individ begins at birth.
