Nihal Silva
Sri Lankan actor
Dahanayakage Nihal Ranjith Silva (Sinhala:නිහාල් සිල්වා) (10 January 1954 – 3 December 1989), popularly known as Nihal Silva, was a Sri Lankan comedian and actor. He rose to fame playing Sargeant Nallathambi in the play of the same name. The character was a stereotypical TamilHindu with a bald head, small moustache, police suit and Vibhuti, three lines of ash, on his forehead.
Personal life
[edit]Silva was born on January 10, 1954, in Kirilapone[2] and grew up in Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka as the youngest of the family. His father was Dahanayakage Andrew De Silva, who worked in Railway Department. His mother was Wataketiya Rajapaksage Lucyhami. She worked as a hospital attendant. Silva has three elder sisters, Malini, Shriyawathi and Padmini and three elder brothers, Nimal, Siripala. Silva educated at Sri Waishaka Vidyalaya, Wellawatte and Sri Watawala Maha Vidyalaya, Hatton.[3]

Nihal De Silva is the author of "The Road From Elephant Pass", which won the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award[1] and the Gratiaen Prize.[2] He also published "The Far Spent Day" and "The Ginirella Conspiracy".[3]
Biography
De Silva was known for his interests in avifauna, evident in The Road from Elephant Pass and The Ginirella Conspiracy. He received his primary education at St. Josephs College, Colombo, and later completed his studies at the University of Ceylon (now University of Peradeniya, Kandy).
"Nihal was a stalwart of St. Joseph's College, an avid golfer and a wildlife enthusiast. His keenness for wildlife are to be seen in the many books he wrote, some of which were award winning, amongst them being the 'Gratien award'."[4]

Nihal De Silva (19?? – 28 May 2006) was a Sri Lankan novelist. He won the Gratiaen Prize for his novel The Road From Elephant Pass[1] which was later made into a film. He also published The Far Spent Day and The Ginirella Conspiracy.[2]
