Sidney Kidman was the second youngest of George and Elizabeth Mary Kidman’s six sons. He was born in at Kapunda in South Australia, the year before his father died.
In Sid’s mother remarried, but it was an unhappy arrangement and one by one Sid’s older brothers left their home near Adelaide. Sid earned some money working in stockyards and at the age of 13 bought a horse and headed north.
He found his older brother George on Poolamacca Station in the Barrier Ranges of New South Wales. George was not happy to see Sid and ordered him to go home. Sid’s refusal to go was the start of a life of hard work and enterprise that earned him the title of Cattle King.

From a humble background as a stockman, Sidney Kidman () went on to own, control, or have a financial interest in more pastoral land than anyone else in modern history. He was known in Australia and throughout the world as "The Cattle King."
When Australia had few railways and fewer telegraphs and when there was no such thing as wireless, motor frakt, or airplanes, Sidney Kidman started to build and steadily added to two big chains of stations that stretched almost the length and breadth of Australia. With the aid of his phenomenal memory and his intensive knowledge of the geography of the bush, plus a small army of dedicated men, Kidman controlled the movement of great herds of boskap hundreds of miles apart and sent stock from his semi-arid lands in an evenly flowing stream to markets. Kidman used more than stations covering more than , square miles of country (an area larger than the state of California).
