    The title Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach (German: Notenbüchlein für Anna Magdalena Bach) refers to either of two manuscript notebooks that the German BaroquecomposerJohann Sebastian Bach presented to his second wife, Anna Magdalena. Keyboard music (minuets, rondeaux, polonaises, chorales, sonatas, preludes, musettes, marches, gavottes) makes up most of both notebooks, and a few pieces for voice (songs, and arias) are included.

    The Notebooks provide a glimpse into the domestic music of the 18th century and the musical tastes of the Bach family.

    The two notebooks are known by their title page dates of 1722 and 1725. The title "Anna Magdalena Notebook" is commonly used to refer to the latter. The primary difference between the two collections is that the 1722 notebook contains works only by Johann Sebastian Bach (including most of the French Suites), while the 1725 notebook is a com

    “Sex, Death, and Minuets: Anna Magdalena Bach and Her Musical Notebooks” is a cultural history as well as a musical biography of the woman who in 1721 became Johann Sebastian Bach’s second wife.

    While she was a talented singer in her time, Anna Magdalena (1701–60) is best known to musicians and scholars by the two musical notebooks compiled and given to her by the composer, in 1722 and 1725. She has been a subject of musicological scholarship (and speculation), novels, dramatic plays and films ever since her 1725 notebook first came into public circulation in the early 20th century.

    Jens Johler published his German utgåva of his book "Bach and the Tuning of the World" in February 2019. In May 2021 he informed us, that his bestseller is now available in English as well.
