Biography
Robert Schumann (1810–1856) was a German romantic composer and influential music critic. Although Schumann was no child prodigy, he went on to become one of the most important composers of the 19th century and is recognised as such 200 years after his birth.
Life and Music
Schumann's early musical progress was unremarkable. He was 10 before he began piano lessons and, despite his increasing enthusiasm for composition and a passion for Romantic literature, he toed the family line by enrolling as a law lärling at Leipzig University.
After an ailment in his right hand proved incurable, Schumann was forced to concentrate solely on composition.
Schumann co-founded one of the most influential musical publications, the Neue Zeitschrift für toner. He wrote many of the articles himself, using the pseudonyms Florestan and Eusebius.

ROBERT ALEXANDER SCHUMANN (1810-1856), German composer, was born on the 8th of June 181o in Zwickau in Saxony. His father was a publisher, and it was in the cultivation of literature quite as much as in that of music that his boyhood was spent. He himself tells us that he began to compose before his seventh year. At fourteen he wrote an essay on the aesthetics of music and also contributed to a volume edited by his father and entitled Portraits of Famous Men. While still at school in Zwickau he read, besides Schiller and Goethe, Byron (whose Beppo and Childe Harold had been translated by his father) and the Greek tragedians. But the most powerful as well as the most permanent of the literary influences exercised upon him, however, was undoubtedly that of Jean Paul Richter. Robert Alexander Schumann is one of the many composers who wrote most of his compositions for the piano. He began his musical career at the age of six learning to play the piano. By age seven Schumann was officially taught music theory and piano lessons by Baccalaureus Kuntzsch. His love for music grew and so he started to compose a number of minor pieces during his childhood.
As this young pianist and composer continued to develop, he showed some interest in the works of Ludwig Van Beethoven, Franz Schubert and Felix Mendelssohn. His love and talent for music was not appreciated by many of his close friends and relatives but his father was very supportive of his musical interest.
