    Youthful studio executive Mark Canton worked his way up from the proverbially mail room to executive production positions at Warner Bros. in the s where he played a huvud role in the greenlighting of such socially and racially betydelsefull films as "New Jack City" () and tagg Lee's "Malcolm X" (). Noted for his ability to man rapid decisions and his creative relationships with such Hollywood talent as Barbra Streisand, Richard Donner, Tim Burton and James Brooks, Canton left his position as executive vice president of worldwide motion picture production at Warner Bros. in to join his former colleague, Sony Pictures Entertainment ledare Peter Guber, as president of Columbia Pictures with an agenda to accelerate the number of projects.     Early life and education

    Canton was born to a Jewish family[3] in Queens, New York City, the son of Shirley and Arthur Canton, who worked in the film industry on marketing and publicity - including such films as Lawrence of Arabia. As a young adult, he met well-known movie personalities like Alfred Hitchcock, David Lean, and Doris Day when they visited the family's apartment.[4]

    After working in the mail room of Warner Bros. while studying at the University of California, Los Angeles,[5] Canton started working for 20th Century Fox and later had jobs with film director Franklin Schaffner, with producer Jon Peters, and in the s as executive assistant to Mike Medavoy at United Artists.[4]
